About TAL SIMON

Tal Simon's work is based in personal memories and recollections. It emerges through visual depictions of intimate experiences, that are stretched through a long process of image-making. Uniquly gentle yet forceful, expressive, and distinctive to his style, his works are mindscapes amalgamating reality, imagination, conflict and freedom.

Simon grew up in Kibbutz Be'eri in the south of Israel, neighboring the Gaza strip. There, the landscape often changes dramatically in direct relation to the armed struggle and the frequent presence of Israeli armed forces, turning the landscape into a warzone. An ambiguous tension between beauty and violence is hence frequently sensed in his works. Oscillating between video and painting, the artist describes the notion of "holding a lens towards the world, then swallowing it abruptly" as a visceral understanding of his art and his dynamic relation to the world. Flowing in the interstice between real and imaginary, reality and possibility clash in a constant state of change, resonating with a complex emotional landscape that is at once happy, scary, familiar, strange, luring and alarming. Drawing from art history as well as from contemporary artists, Simon's work offers a fresh and honest perspective on life's dynamic, at times seemingly chaotic nature.
